Dog in need of help chases cyclists for miles

(WMC-TV) – An injured dog, which also happened to be pregnant, ran for miles behind a cyclist. It was her way of begging for help.

It was a bike ride Chris Mogridge will never forget.

"We find stray dogs that have been dumped back in the county and unfortunately Ginger was one of them that we stumbled upon," he said.

Ginger looked hungry. So, the riders fed her a snack and took off, only to be followed for 11 miles through Lafayette County.

"We were completely amazed on how she could keep up with us because we were doing about 15 to 20 miles per hour," said Mogridge.

Little did the two cyclists know, Ginger was literally running for her life. Mogridge took her to Dr. Stobbe, where they found the dog had been shot and neglected.

"Turns out she was also pregnant, she was also a puppy, and long story short, she also had been hit by a car," said Dr. Jennifer Stobbe.

With help from Pampered Paws Animal Hospital, Ginger took puppy steps to recovery. After making strides, Ginger was finally adopted by a family in Vermont. That is when they discovered she had an extreme hernia and a fungal disease from her trauma.

"We realized her condition was much more extensive and all of these problems happen in our community, so we would like for it to be a happy ending," said Dr. Stobbe.

Between a cyclist and a veterinarian, these two say they have seen too many abused and abandoned dogs in the area. They want the community to stand up to abuse so that no other animal has to run for its life the way Ginger did.

"One of my patients a month gets shot and unfortunately animals are voiceless so we have to be the voice for the voiceless," Stobbe said.
