(WMC-TV) – People living in unincorporated Shelby County may soon be required to take on county trash services.

That's because the county spends hundreds of thousands of dollars each year, cleaning up illegal dumpsites.

After Saturday's hard rain, you can only imagine the moldy stink emanating from this illegal dumpsite.  Disposed furniture and unrecognizable garbage are magnets for creepy crawlers.  We found a couch dumped into a creek that flows right into area lakes.

Shelby County Resident Kendrick Perkins says it's a shame you'll find sights like this all over unincorporated Shelby County.

The county government says these situations are forcing them to consider a solid waste takeover.

"It makes the neighborhood look bad," said Perkins.  "I kind of agree with it a little."

The county says nearly 4,500 unincorporated households that are supposed to hire their own trash collection companies, don't.

Taxpayers across the county now spend $250,000 per year to clean up illegal dumpsites.

Cynthia Mitchell says one appeal of rural life is freedom, like choosing your own trash collection company and your own fees.  So she's surprised by the notion of government intervention.

"I didn't know they could do that because this is the county," said Mitchell.

The county says they had to clean up nearly 400 illegal dumpsites last year.  Plus, the health department answered almost 600 calls about garbage left outside homes that failed to hire their own trash company.

"On. No. They shouldn't do that.  No," Mitchell said.

Some residents now pay as little at $18 a month for solid waste collection, others as much as $32.

The county would charge $25 dollars per month, and they're holding public meetings before they commandeer any contracts.

Here are the public meeting locations and dates.  All meetings start at 6 p.m.:

  • Southeast Shelby County Area - September 6, East Shelby Branch Library, 7200 E. Shelby Drive
  • Eads and East Shelby County Areas - September 13, Fisherville Civic Club, 12017 North Macon Road
  • Woodstock and Millington Areas - September 18, Woodstock Middle School, 5885 Woodstock Club Road
  • Bolton and Brunswick Areas - September 20, Bolton High School, 7323 Brunswick Road
  • Northaven and Shelby Forest Areas - October 2, Northaven Elementary School Auditorium, 5157 Circle Road
