Trade your guns for gas, no questions asked

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) – Community leaders will come together this weekend to trade gas for guns.

Leaders say there will be "no questions asked" at the event. They just hope it will help rid the streets of crime, violence, and guns.

Like many residents, Detrial Owens is worried about guns in her Montgomery Plaza neighborhood.

"I have kids that live over here and they're trying to make a life for themselves, so I'm concerned about crime," said Owens.

Bloomfield Baptist Church is teaming up with MAPCO and a few other organizations to put on a "Gas For Guns" day.

In exchange for each gun turned in, they will give away a $50 gas card. As many as three guns can be turned in for a total of $150 in gas.

Each person who participates will also get a pair of Grizzlies tickets.

"Gas is high and the funds are low, so they should be interested in getting gas for guns," said Owens.

The event will be held in the church's parking lot on September 15. The Memphis Police Department's firearms training unit will be on hand to accept the guns.

"We found that 87 percent of our homicides committed this year have been committed with a firearm. Sixty-seven percent of the aggravated assaults we investigated this year, a firearm has been used in those crimes," said Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong.

There will be no background checks on guns or people. All of the weapons that are collected will be destroyed.

While Owens says she has faith in the program, she is not sure everyone else will.

"I think it's going to help a little, but everyone is not going to want to be that honest, and may not want to turn in their guns," said Owens.

The event will take place Saturday, September 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Bloomfield Baptist Church on South Parkway West.
