(WMC-TV) – Late Sunday night, Action News 5 was able to confirm a man arrested in relation to a cross-county car chase and crash is, in fact, a murder suspect in Illinois.

Kody Walsh was arrested in Memphis after a chase that began with Fayette County officers who caught up with Walsh during a routine traffic stop.

Walsh led officers through Fayette and Shelby County until he crashed on Summer Avenue at Waring Road in Memphis.

Illinois state police say Walsh was wanted in the shooting death of a woman on Interstate 90 in Illinois last Sunday and sending law enforcement there on a highway pursuit.

Kee Kee Perry describes the police chase and crash that happened near the intersection of Summer and Waring Sunday afternoon.

"I just heard a big boom and I'm like what's going on?" said Perry.

Walsh is now in custody charged with eluding law enforcement, leaving the scene of an accident, theft, and possession of a firearm.

Officers were attempting to pull the Walsh over for a traffic violation.  That's when he led authorities on a chase from Fayette County into Shelby County where investigators say he struck a vehicle at mile marker 24.

"Officers had stopped their pursuit at that time and once observing this reckless behavior at the 24 mile marker, again tried to stop the vehicle.  Walsh continued traveling into Shelby County eluding officers again," said David McGriff with the West Tennessee Drug Task Force.

As the pursuit continued, Walsh crashed his car into this utility pole knocking out power to several businesses in the area.

"It's amazing to see the pole down like it is.  He must have been going awful fast!  I'm surprised someone wasn't hurt.  Thank God they weren't!" said Cheryl Williams, a witness.

We're told Walsh was later captured after he got out the car and took off on foot.

"When he jumped out the car you could hardly see his face because he had so much blood rushing from his head.  It's just crazy," said Perry.

Investigators say they also recovered a stolen assault rifle they found in the Walsh's vehicle.

"All I can say is hey!  If he was doing something wrong, I'm glad they're getting him off the streets," said Martha Davis, another witness.

Authorities in both states are currently working to coordinate Walsh's extradition to Illinois.
