Olive Branch traffic tickets increase

OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. (AP) - If Olive Branch police write as many traffic tickets the last half of the year as the first, they are on tap to see a 93 percent increase in tickets issued over two years.

Police Chief Don Gammage attributes the increase to officers going to 12-hour shifts, which put more police on the street at one time.

Gammage tells The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/UJChS9 ) it also gave police the ability to set aside two officers a shift to do nothing but traffic patrol. The tickets were so numerous that an additional city court clerk was hired to handle the volume of paperwork.

In 2011, police wrote 14,002 traffic tickets for about a 65 increase over the previous year. The first six months of this year, officers wrote 8,175.
