(WMC-TV) – A 15-year-old was shot and killed by a Memphis police officer. Now, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into what happened.
A news conference was held by Mayor A C Wharton and Memphis Police Department Director Toney Armstrong Tuesday afternoon.
The officer who fired the fatal shot is not being identified at this time. But Action News 5 learned that the teen killed was 15-year-old Justin Thompson.
He was shot by an off duty officer around 8 p.m. Monday in Parkway Village.
The mayor understands the officer may have been attempting to thwart an armed robbery, but that information is preliminary.
Mayor Wharton said he has unsuccessfully tried to reach the teen's mother.
Director Armstrong said the officer who shot the teen is on paid leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
