(WMC-TV) - A Memphis neighborhood faces tragedy for the second time this week. Reverend JC Sherrod Sr., 91, was found dead inside a burning home just a few blocks from where this week's chemical explosion happened.
Firefighters were called to the scene of a house fire on Sunset Street. Once on the scene, they were able to put the fire out within 30 minutes. But what they found next is heart breaking.
They found the body of Sherrod Sr., in the back bedroom while doing an interior check of the home.
His wife and son were also inside the home when the fire started, but they were able to escape from the house before firefighters arrived on the scene.
The Reverend's daughter, Betty Buford, said her father instructed his son to get his wife out of the house first and then come back for him if he could. But if he couldn't that would be okay.
At this time, the members of the neighborhood and family are hysterical. Sherrod Sr. was a key figure in this neighborhood, and many simply cannot believe he is gone.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire. Also, we are not sure if the home had working smoke detectors.
