(WMC-TV) - The death of 15-year-old Justin Thompson, who was allegedly shot by an off-duty MPD Officer, has Mayor AC Wharton ready to take action.
And this week, we should hear an announcement about a committee that will take a very detailed look into police department's procedures.
During a news conference yesterday, Mayor Wharton said the review will look at officer accountability, training, education, recruitment and hiring.
He said the review will focus on whether or not those areas meet the bar when it comes to ethical standards.
Wharton says he is not passing judgment on the department. But according to the mayor, something is not working correctly. And as a result, jobs could be in jeopardy.
"We have to ask the question quite frankly is our current internal processes effective…is it doing what it's designed to do… is it instilling public confidence that the truth will always come out," said Mayor Wharton.
Moving forward, Mayor Wharton says even minor infractions by all city employees, especially police officers, will not be tolerated.
But he says it is important to highlight the officers who go above and beyond their call of duty for the community.
