(WMC-TV) - A hostage situation that turned in to a standoff with police is over and everyone involved is safe.
There were some very tense moments Wednesday morning in a North Memphis neighborhood after a man who argued with his girlfriend barricaded himself inside an apartment with a child.
The standoff situation happened at the Saints Court Apartment Complex on Watkins Street.
When officers arrived, they say the man's girlfriend was able to get away. But police say the suspect began firing shots from inside the apartment, where he and a child were locked inside.
"Officers heard the shots from inside the house. We set up a perimeter, called for the tact unit. They made the scene. Officers apprehended the suspect," said Memphis Police Department PIO Karen Rudolph.
"He beat up his girlfriend. When police came I guess he called the police. When police came he was dragging her out of the house. But when he saw police, he started shooting at police. It looked like a movie," said Antonio Bean, who witnessed the incident.
Police officers armed with rifles had to block off the area near the apartment complex. Several residents who live nearby also had to be evacuated as a safety precaution.
Nobody was seriously injured in the standoff. The woman and child involved are both expected to be okay.
