Wig-wearing bank robbers leave behind fake bomb

(WMC-TV) - Two men wearing women's wigs and sunglasses used a fake bomb to hold up the TrustMark Bank on Houston Levee and Macon Roads in Memphis.

Investigators say the wig-wearing bank robbers told the teller to give them cash or they would detonate a bomb.

Sheriff's deputies taped off the bank as officers sent in a robot to retrieve the package the robbery suspects had left behind.

Investigators say the package was the size of a shoe box and had wires showing.

The two bank employees inside at the time tell investigators the suspects took the cash and left the box behind. One of the men also showed a teller his handgun.

"It is a unique scene. Not so much the bank robbery per se, but an individual walking in with a box that was very well taped up and that if they didn't cooperate, the bomb would explode," explained Chip Washington, Shelby County Sheriff's Office.

After the men left, the teller slid the package out of the front door. The two employees evacuated and called 911.

No customers were in the bank at the time and no one was injured.

It turns out the package had no bomb inside. Investigators are looking for a small red vehicle that left in an unknown direction.

Investigators are not releasing the amount of cash the suspects stole.
