(WMC-TV) - If you think downtown parking is high in Memphis – think again.
A new survey just ranked Memphis as the least expensive major city for parking in North America.
But if you ask people who park downtown, they might sing a different tune.
"I mean, when you come down here they charge you so much to park, especially in the morning," said Lakisha Brown.
But Downtown Memphis Commission President Paul Morris disagrees with the expensive parking claims.
"And you look at Colliers International, which every year comes out with a parking survey and for the past several years they have ranked Memphis as the least expensive parking in North America for any major downtown," said Morris.
And Morris should know. His nonprofit Downtown Memphis Commission is the single largest controller of downtown parking spaces in the city.
He says parking in Memphis is low because the city has more parking spaces than people to use them.
"People in Memphis often think, 'Oh parking is expensive in downtown Memphis.' It's only because they haven't been to other downtowns," he said.
Morris says a proposed merger between national parking giants Standard Parking Corp. and Central Parking Corp. is likely to increase parking rates around the country.
However, it won't affect Memphis because those companies isn't dominant in the Bluff City.
