(WMC-TV) - Willie and Cordy Crittenden still can't believe their beloved neighbor, 77-year-old Billy Penn, died in an horrific crash on Cordova road not far from his Cordova home.
"We found out it was Billy and it's just so devastating, just really a shock," Cordy Crittenden said.
Flowers on a pole mark the spot where investigators say 21-year-old Jordan Stonebrook slammed head on into Penn's Buick Park Avenue around 9 p.m., Wednesday. Investigators say Stonebrook, who was driving a Chevy Tahoe was going the wrong way on Cordova Road.
Witnesses said Stonebrook apparently started driving the wrong way. For about half of a mile, other cars were dodging him going into the other lane and some even driving up on the curb.
Police said Stonebrook appeared intoxicated. Investigators said Stonebrook later said he started drinking a few hours earlier, downing seven shots of rum. Stonebrook was not seriously hurt in the crash.
Billy Penn's neighbors said he was a retired pharmacist with three adult children and almost a dozen grandchildren. They said he loved to farm at a plot near the penal farm.
"Very very early in the morning he left for his garden," Willie Crittenden said. "He was very committed to that. He would always share okra and tomatoes he had planted. He's just a congenial fellow," Crittenden added.
Neighbors said Penn's wife died almost three years ago after falling off a ladder while painting inside the house.
Jordan Stonebrook was taken to the MED with minor injuries. He is charged with DUI, vehicular homicide, public intoxication and reckless driving.
