(WMC-TV) – Janet King is heartbroken.

The place that gave her solace through breast cancer is closing its doors.

"When you can help people and be there for them when they need somebody, that's important," said King.

All day Sunday, artists removed their works from the walls of "Painted Planet".

Eleven years ago, Donna Bowers created the "Healing Planet" ministry, after surviving breast cancer.

Jewelry and painting sales from the art gallery funded her free haven for cancer survivors.

"We have massage people, we have yoga for cancer patients, we have sit-downs," explained King.

Bowers says the ministry has struggled because she never accepted a penny in donations.  Any losses came out of her own pocket.

"We've sold just about everything we have," stated Bowers.

Audrey May is one of many cancer survivors who hopes this one-of-a-kind refuge can be saved.

"We're just hoping other people will see the value of that and to help support that on an ongoing way," said May.

Supporters convinced Bowers to accept donations from two fund raisers last week.  But they couldn't raise enough money.

Bowers is closing her sixth location, $700 short.

"I think my pride got in the way because I just thought God would do it and then this person I work with said, 'Why would you not think God would work through other people?'," said Bowers.

Supporters are still holding out hope they can beat the clock and save Healing Planet.

The gallery is located in the 700 block of Cooper Street, near Young Avenue.  Bowers and supporters will be there overnight clearing out the gallery.
