(WMC-TV) – A local company is one step closer to bringing more than 1,000 new jobs to the area.
Construction on the Electrolux manufacturing plant is now about 80 percent complete and project leaders say the community can look forward to an economic boost.
The Electrolux Memphis Manufacturing Center has reached a construction milestone.
"Personally, it's a great accomplishment," said Adam Roberts, Electrolux project director.
Tuesday, the company installed the plant's exterior sign and logo.
"When you get to put a sign up on the building, you're on the backwards half of the construction phase. You're getting close to completion, so it's a major event once you get to this point because you know we're getting close to finishing," said Roberts.
The 750,000 square foot manufacturing facility will eventually employ 1,200 people and bring an added boost to the local economy.
"Anytime you're establishing a major manufacturing facility like this it brings a lot of economic impact to the area. It's still a big supply base, jobs to the local community, hotels to restaurants and so forth and so on," said Roberts.
When it is up and running, the company will take tons of steel and transform it into Electrolux ranges and wall ovens.
"We're going to produce cooking products. We transform everything from raw steel to finished goods at the back end," explained Roberts.
Once the products are built, they will be tested and approved inside an on-site lab.
"Every product before it goes out the door gets through a rigorous testing program to ensure the product quality is in good standing," said Roberts.
Roberts says it won't be long now until all the excitement becomes a reality.
The construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
