MEMPHIS, TN - (WMC-TV) – The Action News 5 Investigators are on the case of missing Social Security checks in the Mid-South after one victim called our newsroom.
"We're senior citizens," Madean Holt said. "I need my check. I just got out of the hospital. I have to pay my rent plus other bills."
78-year-old Madean Holt should have gotten her monthly Social Security check on Wednesday, if not earlier. But it never showed up. She lives in a senior apartment complex in East Memphis. Several of her friends have not received their checks either.
"We've had several people calling the post office wanting to know where their check is," said daughter Kim Smith.
The Mendenhall Post Office delivers her mail. On Friday a postal carrier stopped by.
"To let them know that the checks for Social Security people that receive their checks that they had been stolen," Smith said.
I talked with several people with the postal service trying to get to the bottom of this. A spokesperson for the Inspector General told me it is not clear what happened to the checks. It is under investigation.
The bottom line: the Social Security checks are not in the mail.
"The number one issue is that they're not going to have food for the weekend. Some family members will have to come and help them," said Smith. It's ridiculous."
Monday is Columbus Day, a postal holiday. That could delay fixing this situation even further.
