Investigators suspect arson in fire that killed woman

(WMC-TV) – Investigators now believe the fire that killed a woman in Cordova was intentionally set.

Neighbors are in a state of disbelief now that investigators say they are looking for an arsonist.

"That's shocking. The neighborhood, I've lived here for five years. It's a nice neighborhood. Quiet," said Frank Clough.

It was around 5 p.m. Sunday when smoke began pouring out of the home on Higdon Cove.

Firefighters later found a woman's body inside. Investigators say there are no reports of anyone else living inside the home. And they are not releasing where and how the fire may have started.

"The medical examination will determine the cause of death," said Battalion Chief Keith Staples, Memphis Fire Department.

"I don't know the parties or what's going on. Obviously there was a motive behind it, for some reason and hopefully it's just isolated to that situation and it doesn't go anywhere else in the neighborhood," said Clough, who lives nearby.

Action News 5 was told the home did not have a working smoke detector.

"My heart goes out to the family. Everybody that's involved. Hopefully they'll find the other party soon and take whatever action needs to be taken," said Clough.

So far, fire investigators have not released the name or age of the woman who died in the fire.
