(WMC-TV) – A man is behind bars after police say he kidnapped two children on their way home from school and tried to touch them inappropriately.
Police say two young girls were approached by a man with a knife Monday afternoon.
The victims told police that the man told them if they screamed he would cut them. He then forced the girls into a field near Evergreen Street and Merchant Street.
Once in the field, the suspect allegedly told one of the victims, "I am going to see if you are a boy or a girl."
According to a police affidavit, the suspect began unzipping the victim's pants and reaching inside. That is when the little girl started to fight back and she and her sister ran away.
A witness told police he was standing by his car when the suspect ran by him. The witness was able to tell police who he thought the man was, and that he had just gotten out of jail for rape.
When police showed up at the home of Leviticus Johnson, they say he ran out the back door. After a short chase, he was arrested. Police say he was wearing the same outfit the victims described.
Inside his home, police found a knife in his dresser.
After a photo lineup, Johnson was charged with sexual battery and especially aggravated kidnapping.
Johnson is a convicted rapist and is on the state sex offender registry.
