(WMC-TV) - In light of the recent attempted ATM robbery that killed a woman in Memphis, police want to remind people to be aware and careful when using an ATM, especially at night.
"I try to come out when it's early, daylight, sun out," said Jade Turner, who lives in Memphis.
It is good advice and Memphis police recommend it all the time to friends and family when using an ATM.
"You just have to be more vigilant," said self-defense expert from Mid-South Krav Maga, Patrick Terry.
Earlier this year, we talked with him about self-defense at movie rental machines. Just like an ATM, thieves target users at rental machines and look for distracted customers with a purse, wallet and credit card exposed.
"You can be targeted any time anywhere and when you're about to do something that takes your full attention and you're out in public and there's no one else around, you want to try to reduce those vulnerabilities as much as possible," said Terry.
Experts encourage people to avoid using ATMs at night, be aware of your surroundings, try and go with another person and stay off of your cell phone. No method is foolproof but reducing your risks can help you avoid being another crime statistic.
