(WMC-TV) – A Memphis mother charged with smoking pot in the car with her child present will face a judge today.
Michelle Ball, 25, has received a lot of scrutiny since her arrest. But there are still many who say Ball is not a bad person.
"She's a good mom," her neighbor said. "You know, the neighborhood is behind her."
Ball was arrested Thursday night outside the Charles Powell Community Center in Westwood Park after Memphis Police officers say they found her parked behind the closed building.
Officers say they smelled marijuana and saw smoke billowing from the car when Ball rolled down the window.
More disturbingly, they say Ball's 2-year-old son was seated behind the driver's seat.
Police say the 2-year-old was almost unresponsive and would not wake up. They had to call an ambulance.
According to court records, a juvenile female in the passenger's seat told officers she didn't know what the problem is.
"We only hit the blunt once each and then y'all came rolling up," she told them.
"For real?" asked parent Cassandra Bland.
She brought her four children to the very same park on Friday.
"That's terrible," said Bland. "That is terrible."
No one answered our knocks on Ball's door or our questions after hearing someone inside.
The Department of Children's Services took Ball's son as she was taken to jail on drug and child endangerment charges.
"I hate this happened, you know, I hate it happened," said one neighbor. "But, you know, she tries."
Ball is due in court Monday. Action News 5 will update this article as new information comes in.
