(WMC-TV) - A two vehicle crash shut down the intersection of Austin Peay and Lakehurst Drive around 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
A Ford Expedition flipped sending two adults and 5 children to the area hospitals.
Chad Hampton, who attends nearby Raleigh Assembly of God Church, ran outside moments after the crash.
"It was very shocking. You do feel helpless," said Hampton. "The highway was strewn with two bodies thrown out I could see on the street. One was over the grass and they at the time were not conscious. They were moving, they were breathing," he added.
Two children, ages 13 and 15 were taken to LeBonheur in critical condition.
Injuries to three more children, ages 9, 13, and 16 were less serious.
Valerie Witherington's daughter-in-law was one of two adults taken to The Med in non-critical condition.
"I know nothing about what happened," Witherington said. "I just know she's mainly at The Med because of just being in shock about the whole ordeal," she said.
Investigators are still looking into the cause of the crash.
