(WMC-TV) – A well-known organization is throwing its support behind the proposed sales tax increase in Memphis.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is well known for its work for civil rights. It now says the proposed tax hike is the best way forward.
But some are wondering why the organization is entering the fray when it comes to taxes.
Leaders say the sales tax increase is integral in another fight. Organizers say the need for early childhood education and education funding are part of the fight for civil rights.
NAACP is not the first organization to back the sales tax increase. Last week, several other organizations threw their weight behind the measure. Some of those include Latino Memphis, Stand up For Kids, and the Mid-South Peace and Justice Center.
The proposal aims to increase the sales tax by a half cent.
It will be on the ballot for voters on November 6.
