Rust College professor accused of rape

(WMC-TV) -  Rust College students and Holly Springs community members were shocked to hear about the allegations against the longtime professor now charged with raping a student in his office.

Former professor Dr. Sylvester Oliver was arrested and charged with raping a female student on Friday.

Holly Springs Police Chief William Hollowell said the investigation began in September, a few weeks after the alleged incident.

According to a part of a  Rust College statement, Dr. Sylvester Oliver, long time employee and Chair of the Division of Humanities, is no longer employed by Rust College. Also, it said the action that lead to this decision is being handled by the Holly Springs Police Department.

Some of his students were shocked, but said they will wait to hear all the facts in court.

"Dr. Oliver was a great, immaculate teacher. He was a great professor at Rust College and I just really don't believe the allegations that have been brought towards him." said student Jerome Nichols.

Oliver still lives in Holly Springs, he declined comment and said he doesn't have a lawyer yet.

"You never know who is telling the truth and who is not telling the truth so the only thing I can do is just pray for the both of them," said Nichols.
