MEMPHIS, TN - (WMC-TV) – It's not exactly "Watergate." But a burglary at 9th district congressional candidate George Flinn's campaign headquarters is causing plenty of headaches.
"Stole a computer with a lot of data on it and some of our cameras we were using for commercial purposes," said Flinn.
Burglars also stole a cell phone and boom box left in a reception area.
"It was my personal boom box as a matter of fact," said Flinn.
Memphis Police say the break-in happened early Monday morning at the building located on Mendenhall just south of Poplar. It was chosen by the Flinn campaign for two primary reasons.
"It's central and it has low crime," said Flinn.
The candidate considers it further evidence of an issue that concerns most, if not all, Memphis voters.
"And it just brings it to the forefront that crime is everywhere and we need to focus on that," said Flinn.
Dr. Flinn and his staff are not certain how the crooks got in. However, they believe it was through a second floor window which had been left unlocked.
There are now new locks on the doors and an alarm system was installed as a result of the burglary.
"We're not going to let it stop us," said Flinn. "We're going to continue on."
Flinn says it's a minor setback for an already uphill campaign.
Incumbent Congressman Steve Cohen issued a statement concerning the burglary of his challenger's headquarters.
"Every criminal act is abhorrent," stated Cohen. "I hope the perpetrators of this crime are apprehended and judged for their actions appropriately."
