Early Voting starts today

(WMC-TV) - Election Day is Tuesday, November 6, but early voting kicks off today.  When you head to the polls, make sure to be prepared with the information you need to ensure an easy and successful voting process.

In this Voter Guide, you will find everything you need to know to be prepared at the polls.

Voting eligibility

To be eligible to vote in Shelby County, you must be a U.S. citizen, 18 years of age or older by Election Day, a resident of Tennessee and have not been convicted of a felony.  If convicted of a felony, your voting right must have been restored by a court order or pardon. 

Voters can vote in state and federal general elections.  In addition, residents living in the suburbs can vote in their respective municipal elections.

Registered voters must present either their voter's registration card or valid state ID at their voting precinct.

Here is a list of acceptable forms of identification:

  • Tennessee driver's license with photo (current or expired)
  • A driver's license issued by another state (current or expired)
  • U.S. passport
  • Federal employee ID with photo
  • State employee ID with photo (including those issued by state universities)
  • U.S. military ID with photo
  • Gun permit with photo
  • Valid driver's license

Student ID cards issued by state universities are not accepted.

Tennessee state law mandates that a qualified voter must be properly registered 30 days prior to the election, you can see if you are registered here.

Early voting

Early voting begins October 17 and ends November 1.  You can vote between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.

Election Day

On Election Day (November 6), every registered voter is assigned a location to vote which will be printed on the voter's registration card. This location is based upon voter's home address. You can see a full list of polling locations by clicking here.
