Three former school employees charged with embezzlement

(WMC-TV) - The Olive Branch Police Department revealed the results of an investigation into embezzlement at Olive Branch Middle School.

Three former school leaders are all accused of taking more than $10,000 from the school where they once worked.

Former principal Michael McCoy, former assistant principal Brooke Phillips and former bookkeeper Kelli McGowen are all charged with embezzlement and conspiracy to commit a crime.

Mrs. Phillips is also charged with giving false statements.

The investigation began after the DeSoto County School District noticed a substantial amount of generated revenue was never recorded. They took their information to Olive Branch Police.

After three months, the DeSoto County grand jury indicted all three.

Action News 5 is told all of the money that was missing was used for personal gain in some effect, though investigators would not go into specifics about what the money was spent on.

The money was reportedly embezzled in several increments over the 2011-2012 school year, even a couple of months before that.

In a statement, the school district states that all three former employees resigned last summer.

Investigators do not believe anyone else was involved and the embezzlement only took place at Olive Branch Middle School.

All three suspects are out on $7,500 bond.
