(WMC-TV) – A Memphis mother is under arrest after police say she lied about her daughter dying in order to garner attention and money from her coworkers.
According to a police affidavit, Jessica Banks, 24, told several of her coworkers that her 22-month-old daughter died as a result of an asthma attack.
Police say several of Banks' coworkers donated money to her after seeing an obituary for her daughter. The obituary said when and where a funeral service would be held for the toddler. When employees went to the service, they found out there was no funeral scheduled.
Investigators spoke with Banks, who they say admitted to making the entire story up because she wanted attention. She told police she used the $410 given to her by coworkers to buy clothes for her daughter, who did not actually pass away.
Jessica Banks is charged with creating false impression of death and theft of property. She posted a $100 bond to get out of jail. She is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning.
The woman who answered the door at Banks' listed residence said she did not want to comment on the charges.
