(WMC-TV) - World renown musician Yo-Yo Ma stopped in Memphis thanks to the Memphis Symphony Orchestra to perform with a group of students.

Yo-Yo Ma called his performance with Colonial Middle Schools students an integrated arts experience.

It was a collaboration of classical ballet featuring improvisational street dancing known as jookin'.

Students who had the chance to witness the ensemble were clearly fascinated.

Yo-Yo Ma said he hopes his visit inspires great teaching which in turn provokes passionate learning.

"People might ask, 'What is it for?' Well, you see how excited the kids were? When people get excited they get curious, they get motivated, they get passionate," said Ma.

The 'Hip Hop Dying Swan' is a unique art form that Yo-Yo Ma said embodies artistic expression filled with energy and grace.

Yo-Yo Ma performed at the Cannon Center on Monday and visited Colonial Middle School as a special treat.

Students said they enjoyed his performance.
