(WMC-TV) – Charges have been filed in the death of an infant who was tragically killed in a car crash Thursday. According to police, the baby was inside a car that crashed on Baskin Street and Dove Street.
Atu Campbell, 24, is charged in connection to the death of the baby girl who was riding in the car with him when his car drifted off the road and crashed into a fence.
He is facing several charges, including reckless homicide, violation of child restraint law, reckless driving and more. The affidavit also states he is being charged for driving while his license was suspended/revoked/canceled.
According to the affidavit, an off-duty firefighter says he witnessed Campbell's car go off the road and run into a tree.
The fireman went to the car to help, and found the driver slumped over into the passenger's seat.
He also saw a car seat in the back passenger seat. The car seat was upside down and not properly installed or secured, according to the witness. He also says he also noticed the little girl face down on the rear passenger floor board. The firefighter says she was pale and stiff.
The witness says he noticed the child was not breathing and did not have a pulse. He says he tried to give first aid to the child before the crew arrived on the scene.
The baby was taken to LeBonheur Children's Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
Mary Rogers lives on the property where the car crashed.
"They were trying to get the baby to respond but it didn't," said Rogers.
"Parents or grown-ups that are responsible for children you need to slow down driving and buckle these children up," said Perry Benton, who lives nearby.
