Attorney shares hardships of father who lost infant

(WMC-TV) - 24-year-old Atu Campbell appeared in court Friday facing several charges including reckless driving and reckless homicide in connection with a deadly accident killed his baby girl.

Atu Campbell's attorney said what makes the case against his client so difficult is that he lost a child and is being charged with a crime.

"He hold down two jobs.  He goes to school at Southwest College.  He has no prior record to speak of.  He has one driving offense and no prior felony record at all.  This is every appearance of an accident," said Campbell's attorney.

Memphis Police said Campbell was driving down Baskin St. in Frayser, when he lost control of his car, hit a curb and crashed into a tree.

"We're looking to see if any car caused him to run off the road.  I don't know of any reason he would have run off the road...absent being run off the road by another car," said Campbell's attorney.

According to the affidavit of complaint, the child was in the vehicle with Campbell and was found face down on the rear passenger floor board.

Investigators said the baby was in a car seat but it wasn't properly installed or secured.

Family members ,who did not want to talk on camera, said the little girl was born premature and was very small for 8-months-old.  They believe she came out of her car seat.

Attorneys for Campbell said they will be conducting their own investigation to determine what caused the crash.
