Fed. leaders to discuss treatment of black juveniles at detention center

(WMC-TV) – Federal leaders will meet with the public Monday to get input on changing the way the Shelby County Juvenile Detention Center handles its troubled youth.

Investigators began their probe of juvenile court after complaints that Shelby County's Juvenile Court and Detention Center failed to provide due process to "all children."

Starting in August of 2009, investigators began looking into charges that juvenile court's administration of juvenile justice discriminates against black children.

Charges included everything from failing to provide black children with reasonably safe conditions of confinement, to failure to hold probable cause hearings for youth arrested without a warrant.

Tonight's meeting will look at ways juvenile court can be improved. This includes suggestions made by community members back in June.

Department of Justice investigators say if you have questions or concerns about juvenile court – you are invited to attend. The meeting will get underway at Memphis City Schools Central office at 5:30 p.m.
