(WMC-TV) - This morning, we broke the news of a police chase that led to a crash and traffic jam on Sam Cooper. Memphis Police were in pursuit of a robbery suspect headed northbound on I-240 near Poplar.
The pursuit ended on Sam Cooper east of Tillman. That's where officers took the suspect into custody. After the person was taken into custody, police say an officer attempted to clear the scene by driving across the grassy medium between the east and westbound lanes of Sam Cooper.
But the rear bumper of the officer's car got caught on the ground and was pulled away from the vehicle on the right side. The officer was able to drive his/her squad car out of the median without causing additional damage.
The incident caused a traffic jam early Tuesday morning.
We are working to find out the robbery suspect's identity, and where he was fleeing from. This story is still developing, and will be updated as new details come in throughout the morning.
