COGIC could host major conferences in Memphis throughout year

COGIC could host major conferences in Memphis throughout year

(WMC-TV) - For the second time in the history of Church Of God in Christ convocation delegates are meeting in St. Louis instead of Memphis.

But don't count Memphis out when it comes to the possibility of COGIC delegates returning to the Bluff City.

You can find COGIC announcements online tell you all about this year's Holy Convocation, but for the second year in a row COGIC - that brought millions of tourist dollars to Memphis - is again being held at the America's center in St. Louis.

Memphis' Convention and Visitor's Bureau spokesman Kevin Kane said that COGIC leaders did send paperwork offering Memphis a chance to bid on hosting the convocation.

But Memphis just does not have the hotel space and number of arena seats church leaders are looking for.

"You basically have to have an indoor football stadium to be able to accomplish that and St. Louis has that, you know Dallas would have that," said Kane.

While it's unlikely COGIC's huge convocation will be held here in Memphis in the near future, there are some negotiations going on right now that could draw thousand of COGIC members back to this city.

"Well having said that - we are working with the church on some major major conferences that they do during the course of the year," said Kane.

Kane said Memphis could be just right for a number of smaller annual meetings Cogic hosts around the country.

He also said while COGIC's convocation departure created a void in Memphis, a lot of other events are taking up the slack.

In fact this is turning out to be the busiest year in the convention center's history.

"We had conferences and conventions you know, one or two almost every month, we've had them back to back to back. We've had a very, very busy convention calendar," he said.

COGIC's 105th annual Holy Convocation gets underway in St. Louis on Nov. 5 and runs through Nov. 13.

Delegates from around the world are scheduled to attend.
