(WMC-TV) - The second person critically injured in a chemical plant explosion two months ago died over the weekend as a result of his injuries.
Sunday, Jeff Laird died from the injuries he sustained in the explosion at the PennAKem plant in September.
The other victim, Gregory McKnight, passed away two days after the explosion.
"I'm deeply saddened that we lost another one of our citizens to this it's a tragedy," said Tennessee Representative Antonio Parkinson.
Parkinson organized a neighborhood meeting in the days and weeks after the explosion to help neighbors get some answers from plant leaders.
"In all of the years of that plant operating there they had never had an accident like that," he said.
And it is still unclear why there was an explosion. It remains under investigation.
In the meantime, Parkinson says the plant has already made some improvements to its safety procedures and is open to more.
"According to PennAKem, that's been their number one, their overriding goal, safety of their workers and safety of the community," said Parkinson.
As the Community mourns another loss, there is a stronger push for more safety guidelines at the North Memphis plant, all while the investigation into the explosion continues.
