23 people busted outside historic Mid-South church

(WMC-TV) - Vandals toppled decades old gravestones at a cemetery outside a Mid-South church, and now 23 people are charged after they were busted in an undercover sting.

To many, it's sacred and peaceful ground that shouldn't be disturbed.

But there's no resting in peace in Old Trinity Cemetery.

"Knocking over tombstones, knocking out doors, damaging windows," said Chief Donna Turner with the Tipton County Sheriff's Department.

Chief Turner says this historic site has long been a popular hang out for teens and adults.

It's in a very rural area and access inside the church is easy.

All you have to do is yank the stick out of the door.

For the past two months, Tipton County Sheriff's Deputies have been watching Old Trinity Church and Cemetery.

On Halloween night, an undercover officer hiding inside the church waited to bust those trespassing on the property.

In all, 23 people, adults and teens, were busted.

Steven Gallagher and Samuel Rogers were arrested and charged with criminal trespassing and drug possession.

Deputies said these two were far from spiritual the night they were caught.

"Two of those had substantial narcotics on them and were also doing, speaking out Satanic rituals and wording when they were detained," adds Turner.

Deputies say this bust should serve as a warning.

"The one rumor I can confirm about Trinity church is that it may not be haunted by ghosts but there may be a Tipton County Sheriff's office deputy that meets you outside the church if you decide to trespass," said Turner.

If you're planning a trip to Old Trinity, it might be a good idea to turn around and go the other way.
