Repo man shot at Raleigh apartment complex

(WMC-TV) - Two people are in custody after a shooting at a Raleigh apartment complex sent a 28-year-old man to the hospital in critical condition.

The shooting happened at the Raleigh Village Apartments located at Covington Pike and Yale Road.

Witnesses in the apartment complex say the windows were broken out of the car and a man was leaving in the vehicle. But Memphis police say the shooting victim was actually there to repossess the car.

"My son was getting ready to go to school and when the shooting started everybody kind of like, hit the floor, but I kind of like, looked out the window," said an eyewitness.

The witness did not want to speak to Action News 5 on camera, but she said she recognized the gunman as her neighbor.

When the shooting stopped, she asked him why he was shooting.

"He just said somebody just got hijacked for their car," she explained.

The victim, who was on the property to repossess the vehicle, was seriously wounded but was able to make it out of the apartment complex. He ended up at a home on the corner of Arsenal Street and Yale Road.

The homeowner called police when she found the victim lying in her driveway. He was taken to The MED in critical condition.

Two people have been detained by police in connection to the shooting.

With no tow truck in sight, the woman Action News 5 spoke to believes her neighbor was justified in shooting the victim.

"You know, I think he was just protecting what was rightfully his," she said.

The investigation into the shooting is underway.
