(WMC-TV) - If your child attends a private school, their tuition could soon be paid for by the government. But one should know this new program is aimed towards one specific group of families.
Those with low income in Tennessee could be the first to use vouchers to send their children to private schools.
According to The Commercial Appeal, the vouchers would have the most impact in Memphis than in any other city in the state.
Memphis has 91 Private schools - the largest Number in Tennessee. The bluff city also has the largest income-eligible population, and the largest number of failing schools.
The school voucher program is a recommendation from Governor Bill Haslam's task force. The task force says they would have to prove the vouchers are used at high-quality schools.
According to the paper a voucher bill, headed by Senator Brian Kelsey of Germantown, passed last year in the state Senate but was delayed in the house for further study.
However, the program could be in place by next fall.
