(WMC-TV) - The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been in Ripley, Tennessee all night and all day looking for a killer after a popular store clerk was shot and killed.
Crime scene tape is still keeping customers away from the gas station at the corner of Highway 51 and Volz Road.
"I think it's messed up they shot that man like that," said resident Ashley Smith.
The popular store clerk, 38-year-old Deepal Patel, was shot in the face and killed around 10 o'clock Wednesday night.
"Most of people that go up there and try to rob him, he'd just tell them to stay out of his store and I guess this time it just turned bad," said resident Whitney Currie.
Police spent most of the night Wednesday combing the Rolling Hills Apartment complex, after getting tips that the shooter fled into one of the apartments.
"They was down in the E building at first and they started searching everybody's apartment," said Smith.
Sheriff's deputies continued their search Thursday behind the complex for the gun used in the crime.
The Rolling Hills Apartment Complex is no stranger to crime.
Less than one month ago, the Ripley Police Department was there investigating another shooting.
The apartment manager tells Action News 5 that it is not the residents, but the visitors there that cause the most problems.
Residents in the apartment complex say they fear for their safety.
"I think the police department needs to get on their job because we got too many murderers running around here, just free," Currie continued.
Police say they will not stop until the killer is captured.
