Elvis Presley Boulevard groundbreaking for improvement project

(WMC-TV) - The long awaited Elvis Presley Boulevard improvement project finally broke ground Thursday.

City Councilman Harold Collins helped secure $43 million for the project, which is expected to bring major improvements to the three-mile stretch of road.

The heavily traveled street runs in front of Graceland, the former home of rock 'n' roll icon Elvis Presley, and through the Whitehaven community.

Collins said improvements to Elvis Presley Boulevard, include improved landscaping, utilities and lighting that will lure new businesses.

He said it will ultimately make the street look better for tourists.

"You have a mixture of commerce with several Fortune 500 companies. You have the tourism with Graceland and then you have what I consider a premiere middle class neighborhood. And so all of these three combined provides a unique opportunity for us to do something different in this community and build it back up," said Collins.

Construction on phase one of the project is expected to begin next month.
