(WMC-TV) – A body of a young man was discovered Thursday, along Denmark-Jackson Road in Madison County.
Now, the Madison County Sheriff and investigators are trying to find out who murdered 26-year-old Lazar Arnes Smith.
"The body was found lying on the edge of the roadway," stated Madison County Sheriff David Woolfork.
It was quite the shock for a Madison County School bus driver who discovered the body on her morning route around 5:30...in this rural area of Madison County called the Denmark community. It is a couple of miles from an elementary school.
Investigators say the bus driver called the Sheriff's Department, and she waited until investigators arrived. She then went on her way to pickup the school children.
"We're investigating it as a homicide. We're not at this point where we could say it was gang related or not," said Woolfork.
Investigators say Smith was shot several times on the side of the road, where he died. His family says he received a phone call around 10 p.m. Wednesday night.
It is not clear who made that call.
Smith's mother realized the body was her son when she saw a photo of a tattoo he had.
No one answered the door at his mother's home, when our crews stopped by.
Word about the murder moved swiftly around Jackson. It was the talk of Madison Men, a hair salon.
'It's starting to get bad and it's scary. It's really it is scary," stated Mandy Delagarde, a salon employee.
Right now Madison County Sheriff's investigators have no motive for the murder. This is the first murder for the year in the county. There have been 12 murders in city of Jackson.
