(WMC-TV) - SEVERAL people were injured in a MATA bus crash involving an MPD Cruiser on Poplar Avenue Friday afternoon.
Traffic is back to normal on Poplar near Scott. Earlier today the incredible crash brought it to a stand-still.
The MATA bus was filled with passengers, and ended up leaning against the rail on Poplar at Scott.
Bus rider Henry Lewis recalls the crash.
"When I was looking out the window, we seen a burgundy car coming toward like she was trying to miss another car, and came in the other lane and hit the bus and the bus hit the pole," said Lewis. "It moved me, knocked me toward the front."
Here is that the burgundy car. The woman driving the burgundy car had to be cut out of it.
Exclusive images from Chopper 5 demonstrates the massive mess. The crash happened around 3 p.m. Friday.
Investigators say a police officer was traveling west on Poplar, when the maroon car traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed, hit a third car traveling eastbound.
The driver of the maroon car over corrected and swerved into the opposing traffic, hitting the police car head on. Then the MATA bus, traveling westbound, hit the maroon car.
The woman in the maroon car was taken to The Med.
"It was a head on. It was head on," Lewis explained. "The dude that was sitting next to me once we had the wreck, his head hit one of the rails on the bus, and he was knocked out for 2 or 3 seconds. I was checking him to make sure he was alright," he added.
Six passengers on the bus were transported to area hospitals.
Other passengers on the bus sat and just watched stunned.
A total of six vehicles were involved in the crash.
Police say the woman in maroon car is in critical condition. The other people transported to hospitals are expected to recover.
