(WMC-TV) - Leandra Sappington came to the Union County, Mississippi jail Friday night to bring her inmate son vending machine money. She had not heard about a deputy jailer's recent arrest on sex-related charges.
"Supposed to be a role model, but evidently, there are a lot than ain't," said Sappington.
25 year-old Benjamin Bishop's arrest followed a grand jury indictment for exploitation of a child. He's accused of using a computer to entice a 15 year-old into having sex.
Officials with the Union County Sheriff's Dept. tell Action News 5 Bishop had to be booked at the Chickasaw County Jail for his own safety.
Bishop also worked at Victory Christian Academy and Preschool in New Albany. That's where his father is a pastor. A man there called police on our crew when we started asking questions.
The pastor later said he had no comment about his son's arrest. It is unclear whether Bishop met the alleged victim at the school.
"A friend told me about it," said resident Kevin Johnson. "That's rough, that's bad," he added.
Johnson is a father himself.
"I got a daughter almost that age and that's, that's wrong," said Johnson.
If the charges are true, Johnson believes the deputy jailer deserves to be locked up where he once worked.
We're told the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is also involved in this case. Our call to a spokesman there was not returned.
