Firefighters deliver 2,000 coats to Memphis kids

(WMC-TV) - Memphis firefighters donated thousands of coats to school children across Shelby County Tuesday hoping to help keep them warm this winter.

The kindergartners at Cornerstone Prep Academy couldn't be more excited about receiving brand new coats. Every student there will be getting a new coat sponsored by the Memphis Fire Fighters Association as part of Operation Warm.

The smile on Little Antonio's face was priceless.

Antonio was one of 2,000 Memphis and Shelby County children who were gifted brand new winter coats through a partnership with Firefighters Coats for Kids Foundation.

Members of the Memphis Firefighters Association Local 1784 were on hand, delivering the coats in person, fitting each child, and helping them write their names on the tags.

"It's something we think will help the schools, the kids, and the whole community. And hopefully some of them will grow up and want to be firefighters," laughed Thomas Malone, Memphis Firefighters Association.

"To know that prepsters can come to school in the mornings when it's cold outside and be focused and be warm, it's one less thing to hinder them from learning. I think it's spectacular," said Lisa Settle, Cornerstone Prep Principal.

Operation Warm is one of the largest non-profit organizations providing winter coats across the country serving more than 1 million children this year.
