Operation Jingle Bells meant to keep holiday shoppers safe

(WMC-TV) - Shelby County sheriff's deputies are taking extra steps to keep you safe as you do your holiday shopping.

Operation Jingle Bells is in full effect just in time for Black Friday.

"You do feel safer because you spend a lot of money," said shopper Harry Kolatz.

Mid-South shoppers are happy to know law enforcement will be looking out for them during the holiday shopping season.

Officers and deputies will be in marked squad cars in an attempt to deter crime by making traffic stops and routine checks in area shopping centers throughout south Shelby County.

But deputies say you must also play your part by not placing your merchandise in plain sight.

"We just want to show a presence and let the criminals know that they are not going to run the show," said Chip Washington, Shelby County Sheriff's Office.

"That's great because there are a lot of people that would rather steal than work," said Kolatz.

The Operation Jingle Bells effort begins Thursday, November 22 and runs through December 23.
