Mid-South Food Bank needs donations for the holidays

(WMC-TV) - The Mid-South Food Bank needs your donations as supplies are low and officials are concerned about a growing number of people who will have little to eat this holiday season.

If you've ever donated to the Mid-South Food Bank then you know it is where donations are stacked and sorted.

Just down the hall volunteers from various agencies browse food bank isles, looking for a lot of the things they need to prepare nutritious meals.

Mary Frances Hall stopped by the food bank to pick up items for the feeding program at St. Lukes United Methodist Church.

She said a lot of people are struggling to get enough to eat this year.

"We have some homeless, we have some people who are one check away from being homeless," said Hall.

Hall said her feeding program and many others could not survive without the food distributed by the food bank.

"We distribute about 80 to 85 percent high nutritional value foods so we are taking people from hunger to health," said Mid-South Food Bank communications director Marcia Wells.

Over the past few years, there has been a disturbing trend at the food bank, shelves that used to be filled are now beginning to look more empty.

And that's why food bank staffers have put out an urgent call for more donations.

Volunteers like Mary Frances Hall are praying that the community will respond.

"The need is great because we've see our numbers double in the last two years," said Hall.
