New mosquito pools tested positive for West Nile Virus

The Tennessee Department of Health Laboratory in Nashville identified three additional mosquito specimens testing positive for West Nile Virus in Shelby County since the first report on June 30. No positive birds have been detected in Shelby County as of today. No human cases have been reported in Shelby County as of this time.

The Memphis and Shelby County Health Department’s Vector Control Section increased larviciding activity and will be conducting door-to-door environmental surveys in the area surrounding the new positive mosquito pools in zip codes 38105 and 38111. Increased larviciding activity will continue in the zip codes first identified with positive mosquito pools, 38108, 38112, and 38117.

The Memphis and Shelby County Health Department strongly encourages everyone to take extra precautions against mosquito bites. The recent rainfall throughout Shelby County has increased mosquito-breeding areas. All residents are strongly encouraged to take measures to protect themselves, including the safe use of a mosquito repellant containing DEET.
