(WMC-TV) – 'Tis the season of giving. That is why about 150 Memphians received free dental care Friday.
More than 45 volunteer dental hygienists including students from the Tennessee Technology Center offered their services to those in need.
"This is why I got into dentistry in the first place. To serve people," said Dr. Candyce Thompson, Dental Care.
All materials for the free event were donated.
"We have 23 students that are here today and they are all getting a lot of experience," said Janice Harper, Tennessee Technology Center.
Dr. William Smith says for those lacking dental insurance, dental care is often neglected.
"Dentistry is kind of the step-child of medicine sometimes," said Smith, "it's one of the last things that gets taken care of until it's a pain issue".
The motto at Dental Care is "Changing lives one smile at a time". The patients who were seen Friday said getting help for an aching tooth makes all the difference.
"It was actually another tooth too but I'm grateful to just get one done," said patient Alicia Wood.
Performing routine procedures like fillings, cleanings, and extractions, the team at Dental Care gave patients like Alicia Wood an early gift.
"I couldn't be more grateful. This is the best dentistry, I mean Christmas present a person could have," said Wood.
"To be able to give back to my community in the office that I work in, I just feel so blessed this holiday season to be apart of this," said Dr. Thompson.
Dentistry From The Heart is a registered non-profit organization. Over the past nine years, the events have contributed more than $10 million in free dentistry and helped more than 80,000 patients across the country.
