(WMC-TV) - A Memphis man has been convicted with first degree murder in the death of his girlfriend's two-year-old daughter.
Shelby County jury convicted Calvin Jones, 30, of first degree murder, aggravated child abuse and aggravated child neglect Friday.
Jones was babysitting the toddler and her siblings back in 2010 while the mother, Anisha Alford, was away.
Jones told police that he hit the toddler with a basketball shoe and the back of his hand - after the toddler, who was potty training, soiled herself.
The child suffered multiple internal injuries and became ill that evening.
Jones and Alford did not seek immediate medical attention for the child and went to bed for the night.
They found the toddler dead the next morning.
The child's death was caused by multiple blunt force trauma.
Alford is also charged in the child's death and has a court date on Dec. 17, 2012.
Calvin Jones was automatically sentenced to life in prison for the murder conviction.
This conviction is a result of the Shelby County Child Protection Team's collaborative approach to protecting children in the community.
