Action News 5 rides along with FedEx delivery driver

(WMC-TV) - FedEx employees have been prepping for their busiest day of the year, and perhaps -- their busiest day in the company's 40 year history.

Action News 5 was given exclusive access to the front lines of FedEx -- their drivers. Our cameras tagged along as packages made their way to their destinations.

Moving 19 million packages along 42 miles of conveyor belts is no easy task, but for FedEx driver John Evans, moving these packages is his mission during the busy holiday shipping season.

"Set your route up to the best of your ability, make sure you're on the right side of the street for delivery," said FedEx driver John Evans.

His mission is to safely serve his customers.

"I have a route...I'm a swing driver. I run different routes everyday.  When somebody's on vacation, sick. A typical day for me is 80 to 90 stops," Evans said.

Monday may be more like 110 stops for Evans.

FedEx officials say Monday is not really any different than most, other than the number of packages being shipped.

"The process doesn't really change, what changes if the number of aircraft we have, the number of trucks that we have, the number of people it takes to deliver," said FedEx Vice President John Dunavant.

John Evans says he has been preparing for this day for months.  He considers it the "Super Bowl of shipping".

"We have a lot of orders coming in. People are online shopping, getting ready for Christmas. So, basically, today is the busiest day," said Evans.

FedEx says Saturday, December 22 is the deadline for standard or priority mail, if you want to get your package to its destination by Christmas.
