Mid-South school districts reflect on emergency plans

A gunman entered a Connecticut elementary school and killed 26 people Friday morning. A gunman entered a Connecticut elementary school and killed 26 people Friday morning.

(WMC-TV) – Mid-South school districts are referring back to their emergency plans in response to the deadly elementary school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

Shelby County Schools released a list of safety measures they have in place in case of an emergency, a few of those include:

  • Uniformed Shelby County Schools Officers and School Resource Officers patrol campuses on foot and/or with marked and unmarked police vehicles in designated areas to ensure high visibility.
  • The Shelby County School Officers have direct radio contact with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, SCS transportation department and operations in the event of emergencies.
  • Surveillance cameras are in all high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools in Shelby County Schools. In addition, play grounds/portables are monitored with camera systems at elementary schools.

In addition to sending out its safety protocol, Shelby County Schools released the following statement about the shootings:

"The hearts and prayers of the Shelby County Schools family are with the families of Sandy Hook Elementary School and the Newtown, Connecticut community following today's tragic events."

Memphis City Schools also released some of its safety measures:

  • There are security cameras at entrances and throughout schools
  • Visitors must be buzzed in via a visual monitoring system
