(WMC-TV) - Minutes after both officers were rushed to The MED, Memphis Mayor A C Wharton and MPD Director Toney Armstrong arrived.
MPD Organized Crime Unit (OCU) officers were serving a search warrant for narcotics when a suspect opened fire, injuring one of those officers and killing another.
There was chaos at The MED when the call went out that two MPD officers were shot in the line of duty. Officers swarmed the hospital after the call went out.
Officer Martoiya Lang, 32, was pronounced dead at the hospital. Lang, the mother of four children, joined the police force in 2003. She moved to the OCU in June 2011.
"We appreciate deeply beyond measure, words cannot describe the sacrifices that they make," said Mayor A C Wharton.
The second officer injured, William Vrooman, 32, has been on the force since 2007. He has been with OCU less than one year. Vrooman was shot in the leg. He was treated and released Friday.
The 21-year-old suspect was critically injured when officers fired back.
"The people who took this officer's life they don't have any shoot, not shoot rules and we just want everybody to join the men and women of the police department in saying enough is enough," said Mayor Wharton.
Director Armstrong says there was one other person inside the house at the time of the shooting. A 26 –year-old man that is in custody but has not yet been charged with anything.
